Livehouse Tri Ka Tsai @ Lau Bak Livehouse

This March, Lau Bak Livehouse – Freespace’s cultural melting pot for performance – hosts Tri Ka Tsai, an original Hong Kong-style cabaret production co-created by local multidisciplinary artists Yuri Ng, Anna Lo and Rick Lau.

Taking its name from Hong Kong’s post-handover, tricultural, trilingual generation, Tri Ka Tsai explores the city’s uniquely hybrid cultural and linguistic landscape.

For Cantonese-speaking Hongkongers, having a bilingual mastery of English was always seen as a ticket to professional success. Over the generations, Hong Kong English was shaped and influenced by Cantonese accents and cadences to become the unique dialect we all know today. But how have things changed in the decades since the handover, when Mandarin was also added to the linguistic mix?

Tri Ka Tsai takes a witty and humorous look at how Hong Kong people navigate their trilingual environment, uncovering the joys and horrors of deciphering the city’s inspired variations of Chinglish and Hong Kong-style Mandarin.
