This year in Taiwan, a dazzling rainbow finally emerged, gathering the power of citizens and non-mainstream culture. This social atmosphere of pursuing freedom is also reflected in 2019 Taipei Fringe Festival. This year's Taipei Fringe Festival inherits the spirit of the "Fringe", seeking non-mainstream and free artistic expression. Through flexible performance spaces, the festival is more integrated into the lives of ordinary people. Girl's Notes, performed in the Nadou Theatre in Dadaocheng, is the best evidence of the transformation of a traditional building into a theatre space. Nadou Theatre, an old architecture in Dadaocheng, is a quaint red-brick building that depicts the historical traces of a traditional tea store into an art space. In addition to the history of tea, it also contains the past and the memory of the father. When the architecture is transformed into a performance theatre, when the experimental drama of gender issue unfolds in this space full of symbols of the father (patriarchy), what is going to happen? Girl’s Note is a play, a book, and a dance drama by Taiwanese dance artist Su Pinwen. Su Pin-Wen, who has long been interested in physical and gender issues, draws inspiration from the book "Girl’s Note" and thinks about how girls face sex and how to be how "a girl should be". The book is like a teaching manual. It teaches girls how to be how they "hould be" in various sexual situations. What role should they play in the games of love? When should they kiss? When should they touch each other? The performance at Nadou Theater will explore how female should arrange the dates and play their roles according to the chapter of "Dating" in the book. The relationship between "Girl’s Note" and Nadou Theatre is like a girl facing her father, or feminism facing patriarchy. The theatre space which is full of symbols of authority, is used as a dating space of a girl, which makes if full of conflicts and tensions. When girls no longer date for marriage, and start to explore various possibilities in this space, the space of father symbols will become a field that girls breaking through the social norms of gender.
