(Art is one way to live, an energy or power that gives you a way to be)」,對藝術家而言,時間的本質是流動,文件檔案與物件都僅是過去的遺留物,將作品、檔案、物件重新置入前所未見的展呈環境,期望於《做時間》一展開啟了解作品的多元層次。

(I am so delighted that Taiwan has decided to ‘re-claim’ its long lost black sheep.)」

Tehching Hsieh and Adrian Heathfield discuss their highly anticipated exhibition Doing Time with leading arts professionals in Hong Kong

Hong Kong (24th March 2017) – Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) in partnership with Hong Kong Arts Centre hosted an exclusive public conversation between the critically acclaimed performance artist Tehching Hsieh and renowned British curator and writer Adrian Heathfield. It was the first time the duo have discussed their exhibition plans in public since the announcement of Taiwan’s contribution to the 57th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale 2017. Entitled Doing Time, the exhibition will be on view at Palazzo delle Prigioni, Venice, Italy, for the period of May 13th 2017 – November 26th 2017.

Intentionally timed with Art Basel Hong Kong, this precursor event brought together over 100 leading industry figures in the arts to hear the pair discuss Hsieh’s seminal series of lifeworks from 1978 – 1999: including five One Year Performances and a ‘Thirteen Year Plan.’ Hsieh showed excerpts from the film that records his year spent ‘clocking on’ to a workers time clock on the hour every hour. At each ‘clocking on’ Hsieh also took a still image on a 16mm movie camera of his standing to attention beside the clock. Sleep deprivation was pitted against the demand to be upright and visible. Hsieh’s ordeal resulted in one of the most uncanny performance artefacts made by an artist. A year of life passes through his body in a six-minute film. We see Hsieh floating beside the whirling clock, wracked by the rapid passage of an immense wave of time.

Hsieh’s preoccupation with freedom and constraint was equally evident in the film derived from his yearlong performance spent on the streets of Manhattan without taking shelter of any kind. His ability to roam freely came at the cost of physical degradation, vulnerability and violent encounters. Many of the materials from this year outside with the elements will be exhibited, including minutely detailed maps of his daily wanderings and stark photographs of the solitude of life on the street.

The exhibition will be Hsieh’s most comprehensive show to date, combining the accumulated materials from these two One Year Performances in elaborate installations. In their conversation the duo revealed that Doing Time will also take the viewer back to three of Hsieh’s previously unseen works: short performances and photographs, all made in Taipei in 1973, before his emigration. At the close of the exhibition a documentary, Outside Again, returns Hsieh at the age of sixty-five to the original sites of his performances in Taipei and New York, making a meditation on the resonances of his far-sighted works.

Commenting on the mindset that led him to make these incomparable performances where his lifetime was turned into artworks, Hsieh stated: “Art is one way to live, an energy or power that gives you a way to be.” For Hsieh, the nature of time is change, but his documents and artefacts are the leftover of times past. By re-contextualizing his works, documentation, and artefacts on a previously unseen scale, Hsieh hopes to open up new ways of understanding his lifeworks.

In his talk on Hsieh’s work Heathfield stressed the radical dynamics of Hsieh’s work, and the impoverished conditions of being it evokes. He linked these conditions to Hsieh’s outsider status and his life as an illegal immigrant in the USA. Heathfield stated: “I am so delighted that Taiwan has decided to ‘re-claim’ its long lost black sheep.” Heathfield noted that the exhibition is taking place in “dark global times of racial hatred of migrants and indifference to planetary destruction.” For Heathfield, Taiwan’s exhibition of Hsieh’s work “affirms the value of those who call no nation home, of the wandering and dispossessed. It affirms the labours of those who do not seek the riches of self-possession, but instead a life made in difficult art, in communion with elemental conditions and possessed by the edges of ideas. ”

Heathfield noted that the exhibition will also be accompanied by a catalogue with new essays on Hsieh’s work and by several discursive events with leading international writers.

The special event ‘Doing Time’: Tehching Hsieh in Conversation with Adrian Heathfieldwas co-presented by Taipei Fine Arts Museum and Hong Kong Arts Centre.
